Does being on the Health Care Connect waitlist guarantee a family doctor?

Last reviewed October 14, 2026 · About this site

No. Registering with Health Care Connect can be a big help, but it comes just short of a guarantee. It does not promise a match right away, and it does not promise a timeline.

How your place in line works

When you register, you can share your health needs, such as pregnancy, chronic conditions, or a disability. How much you share is up to you. Care Connectors match people with urgent needs first, so this information can affect how soon you hear back. Someone who is pregnant and has diabetes needs a family doctor sooner than someone who is healthy and has a sore shoulder from basketball.

Your preferences, like a clinician's gender or language, can also make the wait longer.

What happens when you are matched

You will get a letter in the mail with the name of the clinician or team. They will contact you to book a first appointment.

After that visit, you and the clinician decide together whether to continue. If it is not a good fit, you can register again by calling 811.

Keep your information up to date

  • If you find a doctor on your own, withdraw from Health Care Connect. That frees up a spot for someone who still needs one. You can withdraw online or by calling 811.
  • If you move or your contact details change, update your registration online. Keeping your information current helps you get matched faster. Your mailing address must match your health card, and an expired card can cause delays.

Keep looking while you wait

Being on the list doesn't stop you from searching on your own. You can:

  • Call clinics near you.
  • Use DocMaps or iamsick.ca to find clinics that say they are taking patients.
  • Contact your local Ontario Health Team. Many have their own process for connecting people to care, built around your community.

If you haven't heard anything

Your registration letter explains what to expect. You can also call 811, any time, day or night, if you need help with your registration. They may not always be able to tell you where you are in line, so please be patient with them.

Health Care Connect is a good option, but not the only one. You can see all your options on our Find a Family Doctor page, or read how Health Care Connect works.
