Are virtual-only clinics a substitute for a family doctor?

Last reviewed October 14, 2026 · About this site

No. A family doctor or nurse practitioner is meant to be the first person you go to with a new health concern. A virtual-only clinic can look like the same thing, but it isn't. Virtual care can fill a gap for simple needs while you look for a family doctor, but it can't take their place.

When a virtual-only clinic can help

For a quick prescription, a quick assessment, or something very simple such as a routine sick note, a virtual-only clinic may be fine.

What a family doctor or nurse practitioner gives you

A relationship that builds over time. A good family doctor or nurse practitioner gets to know you. Studies have shown that this kind of ongoing relationship is protective for your health. It is linked to fewer emergency room visits, fewer hospital stays, and even lower risk of death.

A complete record of your health. When most of your care happens at one clinic, there is one full record. That makes everything else more accurate. It matters when a new prescription is written, when tests are ordered that may already have been done, and when important screening tests are coming due.

In-person care. Many family practices offer some virtual care by phone or video, as one of several options. They can also see you in person when you need a physical exam, or when a sensitive conversation is better face to face. A virtual-only clinic can't do that.

What about cost?

In Ontario, many virtual clinics charge a fee for each visit. That is very different from an OHIP-covered walk-in clinic, or from your own family doctor or nurse practitioner. Check the cost before you book.
